Adult Strabismus: Straight Eyes Are Not Just for Kids

Misalignment of the eyes is a condition not confined to the pediatric population. In fact, there are more adults with strabismus in this country than children. Many of these adults never seek treatment for fear that "nothing can be done" or "treatment is just cosmetic." Studies have shown that these adults suffer socially, economically and emotionally. One study found that these individuals would trade one-tenth in years of life expectancy to be rid of their strabismus. The challenge we face is overcoming the misinformation and ignorance regarding effective treatment options for adults with strabismus.

We understand these challenges and have launched a program designed to better educate affected individuals as well as professionals regarding adult strabismus. Straight Eyes Are Not Just For Kids focuses on providing adults with access to various media that provide accurate and up to date information on adult strabismus. It is our goal that these adults will benefit from a more informed choice regarding treatment options and unhindered access to the pediatric ophthalmologists and strabismus surgeons who treat this condition.
