Braden’s Story

When Braden’s Mom, Linda, had the gut feeling that her son’s eyes were turning, she trusted her instinct and scheduled an eye examination. Sure enough, the screening revealed that he had esotropia. After more examinations and more opinions, Linda ended up with conflicting information from different doctors and wasn’t exactly sure who to trust or what to do next.

As a concerned parent, she scoured the internet for information on eye disorders like strabismus and esotropia. She encountered many people with strabismus. “Some had multiple surgeries and were still battling the condition and some adults were angry at their parents because they never had surgery as a child.” Linda spent many nights lying awake, unsure of what decision to make for Braden. She scheduled one last appointment with a Pediatric Ophthalmologist and it was his opinion that surgery was needed.

Satisfied that she had exhausted all informational resources and comfortable with the latest clinical recommendation, Linda decided to go through and schedule surgery for Braden. Thankfully, the surgery was a success and Braden’s eyes are straight.

In Linda’s case, she felt information empowered her to make the right decision for her son. “With this condition, it is important to trust your gut, you have to be aggressive and find out every bit of information you can, and arm yourself with that information when you go to appointments. You HAVE to be an advocate for your child.”
