Grant’s Story
When Grant was two months old, his parents Wayne and Crystal noticed his eyes were moving back and forth (“ … like they were dancing.”), and he seemed to have trouble focusing on faces. Wayne and Crystal scheduled a check-up with Grant’s pediatrician who quickly noticed the problem and said it was serious enough that a same-day appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist was needed.
After the examination by the pediatric ophthalmologist, it was determined that Grant had cataracts in both eyes. Grant’s mom recalls the emotions she felt after learning of his diagnosis: “It's just hard knowing that only 1 in every 10, 000 children are born with cataracts, and ours just happens to be one of them.”
Grant’s cataracts were so bad that he most likely could not see anything. There was a possibility that if his cataracts had not been detected in such a timely manner, his sight could have been lost permanently. Surgery was scheduled for both eyes and before Grant turned three months old, he had his lenses removed and glasses prescribed.
In remembering their first surgery experience, Grant’s mom said, “I have never in my life been so anxious about anything. All I could think about was what was going to happen the following morning. I knew it was necessary, but that still didn't ease the anxiety of it all.”
Both of Grant’s surgeries were a success and the change in Grant was immediate. “In the 24 hours after he got glasses, Grant cooed and smiled more than ever,” said Grant’s mom. “We are forever grateful to our pediatric ophthalmologist and thankful Grant can now see.”
