Jon Paul’s Story

When Jonathan Paul was adopted from China, his parents knew that he had a visual impairment. What was unclear from the Chinese medical reports was just how much he could or could not see. His parents remember looking at photographs and his right eye looked opaque or cloudy. His left eye looked fine and from the reports, it was fine.

Jon Paul's parents remember bringing him over from China, "We brought Jon Paul home and took him immediately to see a pediatric ophthalmologist. Jon Paul’s right eye was so sick, it required immediate enucleation (removal). His left eye had a tiny mircopupil and dense cataract. While his left eye had light perception, Jon Paul was essentially blind."

After Jon Paul recovered from the surgery to remove his right eye, he was fitted with a prosthetic eye. The pediatric ophthalmologist then recommended that the cataract in Jon Paul's left eye be removed and that his pupil be reassigned.

Before Jon Paul's second surgery, his parents were told that there were no guarantees that Jon Paul would have any improvement in his vision after the surgery, because it was unknown how long the cataract had been in his eye. The results of the surgery were virtually immediate. Jon Paul's mom remembers, "He began to notice things he never noticed before. He was looking around. His confidence to move around in his environment exploded."

Jon Paul was recently fitted with aphakic glasses and is exploring his new world like many other three year olds.
