Alexander Foundation & See by Three

Fort Worth, Texas (May 10,2011) – Acknowledging its longstanding focus on vision screening, the Robert D. & Catherine R. Alexander Foundation announces support for “See by Three,” the vision screening program of the Children’s Eye Foundation.

“The Children’s Eye Foundation has developed a well-conceived program to address the need for more effective vision screening of young children in our community. We hope that it will be successful in identifying serious but treatable conditions that might otherwise go undetected,” said Denny Alexander, Alexander Foundation Trustee.

“We are most thankful to the Alexander Foundation for their support of ‘See by Three.’ This partnership will allow at least 10,000 children to receive a vision screening and ensure those children who need care receive it,” said Thomas Rogers, Children’s Eye Foundation’s executive director.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says, “Early vision screening can lead to the detection, treatment, and prevention of many eye diseases. If all children receive vision screening at well-child visits in their medical home, permanent visual loss due to amblyopia [or lazy eye] will decrease significantly.”

“See by Three” is a medical-home-based vision screening program and focuses on training, research and public awareness of vision disorders in children that lead to vision loss. The program is currently being implemented in Tarrant County, Texas, and will:

  • Screen 26,000 children for vision disorders such as amblyopia and strabismus
  • Train 300 medical professionals on vision screening techniques
  • Introduce medical professionals to “objective screening devices” that can be used to screen young children
  • Support the follow-up process to ensure that children who have a disorder get the care they need
