Helpful Patching Resources from the Children’s Eye Foundation

Patching is an incredibly important part of treating childhood vision problems. Here are some helpful resources to make sure patching is successful and as fun as possible!

What type of patches are available for my child?

Selecting the right patch for your child may help with compliance and assist in ensuring the success of the treatment.

Adhesive Patches

There are several brands of adhesive eye patches commonly available over-the-counter in drug stores and other retail establishments.

Non Adhesive Patches

Several alternatives are available to adhesive patches. Many of these are made by small businesses, some of which were started by parents of children with amblyopia. Some are cloth patches for wear over the eye while others fit over glasses.

Filter Patches

These patches fit to your child’s glasses and stay on all the time. They can be purchased at many optical shops. Typical brands are Bangerter, EZ Cling, and Amblyopia Cling Patch.

Eye Drop Patch (Atropine)

This type of patch works by blurring near vision only and making the weaker eye do some of the work at near. It is only available by prescription, so talk to your doctor.
Please call your doctor if you have any questions or problems patching or using atropine drops with your child.

You can even sign up for the Eye Patch Club with Prevent Blindness!

And be sure to print out CEF’s patching calendar! Happy Patching!
